Mescaline has the longest timeline on this site. In a controlled comparison, its effects lasted 11.1 hours on average, longer than LSD and more than twice as long as psilocybin (Ley et al. 2023). This composite story follows that clock through one long day in a garden. It is the calmest story here, and also the slowest.
A queasy start
Two people who had both used truffles before set aside a summer Saturday and the Sunday after it. They stayed in a back garden with a high hedge, a deck chair each, a jug of water, a blanket and a bucket placed discreetly behind a plant pot.
The bucket was used. The first hour, and part of the second, was mostly about the stomach: a rising nausea, waves of cold and warm, and a strong wish for it to be over. The Australian Alcohol and Drug Foundation lists "intense nausea and vomiting" among the effects of mescaline (ADF), and in published reports it is often the part people say they had underestimated.
The hedge
Somewhere in the third hour the nausea faded without anyone noticing exactly when. What replaced it was a slow, warm feeling in the body and a change in the light. The hedge at the end of the garden seemed to glow at its edges, as if each leaf were holding some of the sunlight instead of reflecting it.
The visuals in reports like this are usually described as gentle and bright: colours richer, surfaces breathing slightly, patterns in brickwork and bark. Both people in this story spent a long time looking at the hedge and saying very little.
The lawnmower
In the middle of the afternoon a neighbour started a lawnmower on the other side of the hedge. On another day this would have been a nuisance. Now it sounded like an orchestra tuning up, a long note with many smaller ones inside it, and it was oddly comforting.
In reports set in a familiar place, ordinary noises from outside are often described this way: strange, sometimes beautiful, rarely alarming. One of them walked slowly to the end of the garden to touch the hedge and walked back, which took a quarter of an hour.
The long middle
The plateau went on for hours. It was not dramatic. They talked about old friends, childhood houses and what they wanted to change in the kitchen. Thoughts moved slowly but clearly, and both described a mild, steady warmth towards each other and towards the garden.
Food came back into the picture at around the eighth hour: bread, soup, an apple. The sun went down and they moved inside with the blanket. Effects were still there, softer, and sleep was not possible until well after midnight.
The day after
The Sunday was heavy. One of them had a headache, the other was tired in a way that sleep did not fix. In the same controlled study, mescaline caused somewhat more after effects in the 12 to 24 hours following use than LSD or psilocybin did, which matches what many reports describe.
Both were glad of the second free day. Without it, the story would have ended at a desk on Monday morning with very little sleep. For a story that went less smoothly, read the ceremony that was mostly hard work; for one that took a single afternoon, read the afternoon the kitchen clock slowed down.
