For a first time, Dutch-Smart points to its mildest strains: Mexicana, Pajaritos and Tampanensis. Atlantis sits in the middle, and Utopia, Space Invaders and Hollandia are the strong end of the range, described by the shop as unsuitable for a first introduction. Who this guide is for
Magic truffles are legal to buy in the Netherlands for adults. Fresh truffles fall outside the Opium Act and are sold in smartshops (DRUGSinfo), and the Hoge Raad took the same starting point in a VAT case on 10 April 2026 (ECLI:NL:HR:2026:450). In most other countries they are a controlled drug, including the UK, Germany and the US. This guide is for adults who are in the Netherlands and plan to use truffles there.
The ladder, mild to strong
The strength descriptions below are the shop's own, taken from Dutch-Smart's product pages on 13 October 2026. There are no published lab measurements per commercial strain, and potency also differs between batches, so read the ladder as an order, with no fixed numbers attached.

Step 1: mild, for a first time
Mexicana is the strain the shop places at the very start. Its page describes "mild, uplifting effects with virtually no visual effects at a normal dose", with a cheerful mood and an open, relaxed feeling. Pajaritos is a small step up and is described as "cheerful and warm in character, with mild visual effects". Tampanensis is described as more reflective than visual.
These three fit the kind of afternoon in the kitchen clock story: staying in, music, talking, a few hours. Mexicana comes as a 1+1 offer, which is useful when two people share the same plan.

Step 2: the middle of the range
Atlantis is the shop's middle step. Its page calls the strain "significantly stronger than Mexicana or Pajaritos" and states that it "is best not used as an absolute first introduction". People who have tried a mild strain once and felt comfortable with it often move here next. The same page advises against combining Atlantis with cannabis, because that can make the effects unpredictable.
Step 3: strong, for experienced users
Utopia, Space Invaders and Hollandia are the strongest strains in this selection. Dutch-Smart describes Hollandia as "one of the strongest truffle varieties in our range" and "not suitable as a first introduction to truffles"; Space Invaders as "not a beginner's truffle at a full dose"; Utopia as "not recommended as an absolute first introduction". The shop pages describe pronounced visual effects and changes in time perception.
At this level, set and setting matter more than at any other. Difficult experiences become more likely as the amount goes up (Carbonaro et al. 2016), and the people around you and the place you are in decide a lot about how such a moment goes.

How long it lasts
All seven product pages give a first onset after 20 to 45 minutes (Hollandia: 20 to 40) and a total of about 3 to 5 hours; the Utopia page gives 3 to 4 hours. The Dutch drugs information service gives an onset of 20 to 60 minutes and about 3 to 4 hours of effects, after which you are not yet sober (DRUGSinfo). Keep the rest of the day and the evening free.
Before you buy: a short checklist
- Age. Smartshops sell to adults only.
- Medication. Lithium combined with a classic psychedelic was linked to seizures in 47% of 62 reports (Nayak et al. 2021). Antidepressants and other medicines can interact too; check with a pharmacist.
- Mental health. People who are sensitive to psychosis, or have it in the family, should not use truffles (DRUGSinfo).
- Place. A quiet room you can stay in, with no plans to go out. Hotels and shared rooms make this harder.
- People. Someone sober nearby, or at least reachable.
- No second portion. Waiting is part of it. Many difficult stories start with "nothing was happening, so I took more".
- No traffic. Driving or cycling under the influence is against Dutch law (Wegenverkeerswet 1994, art. 8).
- Leave them here. Do not take truffles across a border.
